Projects / Portland City Hall Facade

Portland City Hall Facade

Designed by Carrère and Hastings and completed in 1912, Portland City Hall is a landmark clad in Maine granite. Its existing façade lighting—limited to the tower with uneven illumination and failing metal halide fixtures—did not reflect the building’s architectural presence.

The new lighting scheme restores clarity and balance while respecting the historic structure. Using existing electrical infrastructure, discreetly integrated fixtures illuminate the façade without visual intrusion. Matrix wall washers define the roofline and side elevations, while floodlights enhance the tower and front façade. Additional concealed poles provide even coverage, eliminating hotspots and revealing the building’s full composition.

RGBW technology enables both refined white light—carefully tuned to complement the granite—and dynamic color for civic events. A wireless DMX control system with scheduling allows seamless transitions between daily and seasonal scenes.

The result is a revitalized nighttime identity—honoring the building’s heritage while introducing flexibility, efficiency, and visual presence.
